State of emergency declared in the Maldives: Alert

MALDIVES —  Our ground team in the Maldives has confirmed that a state of emergency remains in place today as the former President has been arrested.   Daily News Asia reports that Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was arrested inside his home on Monday, following, a deepening crackdown by the government on the opposition.

The current President reportedly  enacted a 15-day  state of emergency, ultimately, deciding to send troops to the country’s top court.  As of this writing, we’re told that the  state of emergency is in place amid reports that there will be attempts to overthrow the President.
