WASHINGTON — Despite much brouhaha over North Carolina’s controversial bathroom bill, the Obama Administration has issued a directive ordering all schools in America to allow transgender bathroom and locker room access. The directive comes amid news that North Carolina’s lawmakers have sued the United States Department of Justice on grounds that they’re overreaching, while, The Department of Justice claims that North Carolina is “violating civil and human rights”.
There is no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students on the basis of their sex,” Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in a statement printed in the New York Times.
Schools can opt to provide other accommodations for those who require more privacy, however, under Obama’s directive are not lawfully permitted to require transgender students to use biological bathrooms. According to Loretta Lynch, schools that buck the directive, can expect landslides of lawsuits and the immediate loss of federal funding.
