More than they’ve ever had in the month in January, since, at least 2000. According to statistics released by the Associated Press, more than 51 people including a father of three were killed this month. Such a high number of homicides is typically seen during the summer in Chicago, whereas, violence tends to stay at its peak during that particular timeframe.
Chicago police chalk up the rise in violence, to just that, a rise in violence. Police officers deny that a decrease in police presence, er, has led to the uptick in murders and homicides. In recent weeks, traffic stops and routine police checks have dramatically decreased because ‘cops don’t want to be criticized, or become the next viral video’ per Chicago’s interim police chief.
