Following yet another contentious showdown on Tuesday, the U.S Senate formally rejected competing Democratic and Republican spending bill measures. The rejection sets America on a path for its first government shutdown in more than seven years. Fact: Republicans have the House, Senate, and the White House which means they own a government shutdown.
The Lowdown
As expected America is now barreling towards its first government shutdown in more than seven years. On Tuesday, Senate Democrats formally sank the Republican sponsored spending measure that would have effectively extended government funding through 21 November. The rejection sets the country on yet another troublesome path with Donald Trump at the helm.
On the Democratic side of the measure, Democrats sought to extend subsidied from the Affordable Care Act that are set to expire at the end of the year. Democrats are also demanding a reversal to previously announced Medicaid cuts which is the country’s government-sponsored healthcare program for low-income Americans and families.
The government is expected to shut down at midnight tonight.
