It was a rowdy Tuesday at an MTA meeting this evening where a unanimous vote meant a new transit price hike. According to the troubled agency, base fares for a train ride will now set New Yorkers and other back about $3.
The Lowdown
On Tuesday the Metropolitan Transit Authority formally voted to authorize fare hikes. Chief among them is the base fare for a metro ride will now stand at $3. The hikes will also affect drivers on rail riders otherwise across the region. Not a single persan on the MTA ‘s board voted against the measure according to the vote.
The fare and other hikes are set to take flight in January 2026. At that time consumers can expect to pay more on the Long Island Rail Road, Metro North Railroad, and on MTA-owned bridges and tunnels.
Here’s a complete breakdown of all the hikes coming:
- Subway fares will increase to $3.
- Express buses will jump to $7.25
- Monthly weekly and one-way tickets on the LIRR and Metro North are expected to jump about 4.5%
- The Verrazano, RFK, Whitestone, Throgs Neck, Henry Hudson, Cross Bay, and Marine Parkway tolls will see an increase of 7.5%
- Tolls at the Hugh Carey and Queens Midtown tunnels will also see an increase of 7.5%.
