Former FBI Director James Comey is back in the headlines. According to reports, the former Director has been charged with two federal counts related to a testimony he gave a few years back whereas he is accused of lying to Congress at the time.
The Lowdown
Just in recent times Donald Trump openly gloated that his Attorney General Pamela Bondi should prosecute his political enemies particularly James Comey and at least two others. Fast forward days later, NBC News now reports that said DOJ has in fact charged James Comey with two federal counts: making a false statement and obstruction of justice.
According to the indictment against Comey, the charges stem from a testimony he gave to Congress on 30 September 2020. At the time, he was testifying before a Senate Judiciary Commitee hearing where he was at the time asked by Sen Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on whether or not he authorized his department officials at the time to leak information to the press about investigations into Trump and Clinton. The case seems to omit the fact that McCabe a former FBI official is the source of the claim that Comey authorized such leaks which Comey flatly denies. The same report used in the case against Comey also appears to acknowledge that McCabe gave at the time several false or misleading statements to investigators.
