The Lowdown
Ryan Borgwardt the infamous Wisconsin man at the centre of a death hoax has finally learned his fate. According to the case, he has been sentenced to 89 days in jail for obstructing an officer — which is the length of time he actually managed to evade police during the whole hoax.
“I deeply regret the actions I did that night and all the pain I caused my family, friends,” Borgwardt said in court before being sentenced.
What happened?
Borgwardt was reported missing on 12 August 2024 after telling his wife he was going kayaking at Green Lake about 100 miles away from their home in northwest Milwaukee.
The brazen scheme unfolded from there after what prosecutors called evading law enforcement. While on Green Lake he flipped over his own kayak before paddling back to shore on an inflatable raft he purchased prior to the hoax.
