Australia’s social media law which is among the first of its kind in the world — have been altered. According to reports, the previously exempt YouTube is no longer exempt from the new law.

Australia’s first in the world social media law aimed at keeping kids safe has a new update. According to officials, the ban now includes YouTube which was previously exempt from the ban but that has since changed. The under 16 ban also extends to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and X.
The age restrictions will reportedly kick in 10 December and the fines for not following the law are steep. According to an announcement, companies will face fines of upwards of $32m for failing to enact changes on their platforms as asked by the law. As a whole, the law is intended to curb unwanted behaviors among young kids often as a result of being exposed to social media.
