Big trouble for Republicans and Donald Trump both of whom are aiming to pass what is known as the BBB or ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ which is a that is anything but beautiful. According to the Senate rules referee, one particular point must be removed because they cannot use the fast-track option they’re using to pass the bill to also pass these cuts.
The Lowdown
In a major victory for state budgets and Democrats, the Senate rules referee (or Parlamentarian) has found that Republicans cannot proceed with their proposed food benefit cuts under a special rule process they’re trying to use. The significant setbpotential major blow for Trump ‘s so called agenda and legislative priorities.
Republicans had hoped to dramatically change the way Supplemental Nutritional Benefits (or SNAP) were administered in the United States. Under the plan, Repted states to shoulder about 5% of the annual $100B cost that it takes to run the program. This is also a win for working families and other as some 20m estimated American households depend on such benefits to put food on their tables amid stubborn grocery store prices continuing in the United States.
What happened?
Over the weekend, the Senate ‘s rule referred found that the proceeing known as the ‘budget reconsiliation’ process cannot happen with the proposed food benefit cut included. The process allows things to move through the Senate with a simple majority rather than the typically required 60 votes in the chamber. But this is where the problem arises.
Huff Post reports that under the Byrd Rule, provisions found to be ‘extraneous’ are still subject to the 60-vote threshold which it appears that the proposed benefit cut falls into said category.
