Amid fears of World War III, many are still wondering what exactly is Iran’s Fordow facility and how the Americans got involved in yet another war.
The Lowdown
According to publicly available information, Fordo is one of three nuclear sites in Iran (the other two being Isfahan and Natanz.) Israel in recent weeks ratcheted up claims that Iran at Fordow had become dangerously close to obtaining a nuclear weapon though it has not been confirmed how close to said weapon they were at this facility. On part of the U.S, the Trump Administration was quick to acknowledge the so-called military attack a ‘success.’
“Everybody heard those names for years as they built this horrible destructive enterprise. Our objective was the destruction of Iran’s nuclear enrichment facility,” said Trump on Saturday night following the attacks on Iran “The strikes were a spectacular military success.”
The moves to bomb Fordo and other sites first came after the International Atomic Energy Agency found that the site in question had enriched uranium to 83.7% very close to the 90% threshold required for nuclear weapons. Following the attacks, Iran reportedly acknowledged that the site had been damaged by enemy strikes.
What happened?
On Saturday, Fordo was formally attacked by American forces carrying the U.S’s bunker-busting 30,000 lb GBU-57 massive ordnance penetrator. Such bombs due to their size and complexity can only actually be carried by America’s B-2 stealth bombers which were used in the attack. Several reports indicate that this is the first combat use of the GBU-57 MOP.
One thing is for certain though it may take days for the actual damage to the plant to be known. Because the Fordo plant is buried deep underground it’ll take some time to assess exactly how much was done.
Natanz, the opposite nuclear enrichment site, was first attacked by Israel at the start of yet another war caused by the country. America was quick to move on the attacks though calls for the impeachment of Donald Trump have already started given that he attacked Iran without Congressional approval given that the United States was not involved in the Israeli-Iran war.
