Columbia University has buckled under pressure from the Trump Administration to stamp out those who defended Gaza in the protest that rocked the school last year. Students took over Hamilton Hall in protests that staunchly divided the discussion in the United States.
The Lowdown
New developments in the GOP led efforts to quash any protests last year on college campuses. One of those campuses perhaps the most notable is that of Columbia University which recently lost $400m worth of federal funding over claims that the school ‘is letting Jewish students be attacked.’
In its announcement, the University did not disclose how many students were actually suspended or how many would face some form of disciplinary action. The expulsions come just days after a prominent Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil was arrested by ICE and remains in detention in Louisiana. Trump has called Mahmoud ‘s arrest ‘the first of many’ although it remains unclear if the arrest was actually legal. The school did not reveal how many were suspended; whether temporarily or indefinitely or how many had their degrees (‘temporarily’) revoked.
On the school’s part, the school was the subject of major student-led protests last year after students took over Hamilton Hall in protest of the Gaza war and the response to said war in the West.
