21 years after its inception and its call drop rate reaching new criminal levels at times — Skype is being discontinued.
The Lowdown
Microsoft has officially announced the end of Skype nearly 21 years after it first launched to the public. Skype to many is perhaps best remembered as one of the internet’s first video-calling apps.
According to the company, users will no longer have access to their accounts after 5 May 2025. Users are urged to migrate to Microsoft ‘s Teams app instead which is widely available.  Users will no longer be able to purchase Skype subscriptions after today.
Skype was first launched in 2003 and first gained popularity for the obvious service it brought to the world but was equally known for the criminal number of dropped calls people often suffered.
