Adidas backlash, explained

Adidas is doing an about face. Earlier this week, the Germany-based company released a series of ads that did not land very well.

The Lowdown

Adidas new shoe is garnering more controversy than good. The 1972 shoe which appears to be a reference to the 1972 Munich Games was being headed as a campaign by supermodel Bella Hadid.

Hadid who is of Palestinian descent has been critical of the Israeli government since the onset of the war. According to reports, it was Hadid’s involvement that has since had the campaign pulled and reevaluated after the Israeli government complained on X.

What happened?

The 1972 games were destroyed by a Palestinian militant group that called themselves Black September. At the time, the group stormed the games; took hostages, and eventually killed 11 Israelites and 1 local law enforcement officer.
