NASA ‘s Mars expedition rover has made another intriguing discovery. According to the space agency, the rover has discovered an area of the planet known as the sulfate unit that appears to show the clearest evidence yet of what was an ancient lake on the planet. In the area, researchers found rocks and such that appeared to be etched with ripples and waves.

“This is the best evidence of water and waves that we’ve seen in the entire mission,” said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity’s project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, in a statement. “We climbed through thousands of feet of lake deposits and never saw evidence like this — and now we found it in a place we expected to be dry.”
