Japan has always been one of the world’s most interesting countries, and, now they’ve just got a little more interesting. According to government officials, the age of majority (for certain things) is indeed changing “to make the country more modern”.
In fact, the country reportedly wants to update its “civil code” to bring it into the modern world — although the age will not change for other stuff. Among those: alcohol, smoking, and adopting children.  For stuff like that, per officials, that will remain at the age of 20.
The age change comes into play in 2022, where then, people will be able to marry;Â change their gender, and other basic stuff without parental consent.
