A political fight over Stefanik’s seat now looms. According to reports, the New York Republican announced on Friday that not only is she quitting the race she is also leaving Congress altogether.
The Lowdown
Elise Stefanik the hardline Trump-supporting member of Congress is out. According to the New York Times, Stefanik announced on Friday that she was pulling out of the NY Governors campaign. On top of the abandonment of her campaign, she will also not run for re-election next year.
“While spending precious time with my family this Christmas season, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for governor and will not seek re-election to Congress,” Stefanik, 41, posted on X.
Stefanik initially appeared to believe she stood a firm chance in the race, which was until Republican rival Bruce Blakeman joined the already heated race for Governor. She will serve out the remainder of her term. Stefanik is the latest Republican to retire from Congress during Trump ‘s 2nd administration as he struggles to maintain his grip on power.
