Pedro Castillo the former President turned dictator of Peru is going to prison for a very long time. According to reports, Castillo, was sentenced to prison this week for his coup attempt in 2022 that sparked deadly nationwide protests as he sought to enrich himself and expand his powers.

According to a court case in Peru, former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo has been sentenced to 11 1/2 years in prison for his role in his coup attempt to stay in power back in 2022. Reuters reports that Castillo was brought down because his quest for power led to deadly protests and uprisings particularly among poorer areas in the country where he had outsized support.
Castillo joins a long list of Peruvian politicians who have found themselves behind bars. In recent years, the country has jailed at least five former Presidents for varying forms of corruption.
