Amid backlash over plans to change the way migration works in the UK, the Home Office has now announced further changes to curb asylum seekers, too. According to reports, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood wants to strip people of their valuable items in order to pay for their accommodation.

Anyone with an internet connection by now has probably read that the United Kingdom is seeking to dramatically change the way migration and asylum applications work in the area. According to reports, the ruling Labour party is inching closer to several reforms though criticism remains.

In the new announcement per the Home Office, government officials are now moving to add asset seizure to the list of requirements for people to seek asylum in the area. The seizures won’t include things like sentimental jewels, wedding rings, or things of that nature though that exemption has not stopped harsh criticism of the proposed changes.

This proposal hinges on the assumption that legitimate asylum seekers somehow have oogles of jewels just on them crossing the Channel into the area. The proposal also wants to alter asylum protection to a temporary course over the course of 20 years for those who prove they actually fled danger. In all the government hopes to make the UK less attractive to those on the outside which may or may not be a good idea in the end.
