As expected the government shutdown in the United States has halted the food stamp program commonly known as SNAP. The program which helps about 42m low-income American families, the elderly, and people with disabilities will not dole out benefits on 1 November according to the announcement. Officials at the USDA blame ‘Democrats’ for the lapse in the program though Republicans hold the entire government in their hands. SNAP which provides on average $187 in food assistance a month to participants according to the New York Times is often a critical asset for families who simply do not make enough money themselves.
Democrats are demanding that Republicans tap into SNAP’s contingency fund to keep the program flowing though Republicans appear to have rejected that idea. SNAP’s backup fund has about $6B in it and would only partially be able to keep the program flowing for a limited period of time. November ‘s bill would be around $8B according to official tallies.
