Le Monde reports that a French appeals court this week found that not only should the sentence of Husamettin Dogan stay it should be extended. The French court in its verdict found that a year should be added to the sentence due to Dogan ‘deserving’ the punishment for his role in the crimes against Pelicot that shocked the world after she waived her right to anonymity in the case. His original sentence was 9 years for his role in the case that saw Pelicot ‘s own husband, Dogan, and at least 49 others rape Pelicot over the course of several years while she was drugged and unconscious.
“We hope that this jury will say loud and clear that in France, human rights are also women’s rights, that you cannot get consent from a husband, and that a sexual act imposed on a sleeping body is a rape,” attorney Antoine Camus said.
