With fashion week well underway, we’re thrilled to profile an up and coming creator for our ‘Spotlight’ series showcasing designers and related that deserve a chance in the spotlight.

——————————-

1. What inspired you to become a creator? My love for all things art. My whole life I have gravitated to everything art. I will never say no to a craft or the chance to try something new. I love fiber art and it brings me meditative joy.

2. Where do you find inspiration for your work?

All around me! I love talking with other creators and getting/sharing ideas. I get suggestions too from my husband, children and friends. I’m always willing to try and fail at new things.

3. If you could collaborate with another creator who would it be?

That’s a tough one. I really admire Kelly Phelps from CraftandaCuppa. She makes the coolest things with yarn!

4.  What’s one successful strategy you’ve used so far that’s been beneficial to your career as a creator?

Keep trying. I do not let failure stop me from learning. If I cannot do something, I will pause and return to it with a level head and fresh eyes. Sometimes I will take breaks on projects and have multiple going at the same time. As long as you come back to it, you’ll continue to learn and flourish with your skill.

5.  Do you follow trends, or focus on creating your own?

Honestly a bit of both. I like taking trends and seeing where they take me.

6 how are you tackling algorithm changes on social media?

I’m still early on in my social media career as a fiber artist. My plan is to make sure to keep my videos and posts short but interesting to create longer stays on my page and to facilitate interest in my work. I want people to ask, what is she going to do next?

7.  What is your favorite piece you’ve designed so far?

so far my favorite piece is a monokoni although the fit is wonky. Pattern followed from YouTube Shyler Crochets. A silly piece I really love is my viking beard mask.

8.  What’s a critical lesson you’ve learned attempting to kickoff your career as a creator?

The Internet is inundated with fiber artists and it is so difficult to make yourself stand apart.

9. Was there a specific post or moment when you realized, “this could actually be an extension of my career”?

When I started crocheting, I did it as a type of physical therapy after a double bilateral carpal tunnel surgery. When it changed from a must to a need that I enjoyed and craved, my perspective changed. For me, I figured if I can bring joy to others with handmade items, I’ll be happy. To make a living and support my family with it is an extra bonus.
