Police in Los Angeles are continuing to investigate today following reports that they busted up a crime ring targeting home improvement store Home Depot.
The Lowdown
According to Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman 14 people have been arrested in connection with a huge string of thefts that were targeting Home Depot. Officials say that the heists amounted to some $10m in losses for the retail chain and even more felony offenses for the suspects.
On Wednesday, the DA’s office revealed new details about the crime ring. The group reportedly heisted more than 600 stores in total. At least nine of those according to the same announcement are facing felony charges with the others all facing a variety of charges.
What happened?
According to the case, the operation was spearheaded by a man named David Ahl. He ran a company called Arya Wholesale in Tarzana. Authorities allege that his business was actually a front for stolen products from the mentioned 600 stores, of which, many of the items often high-value home improvement wares would end up on his shelves. In order to hide them from suspecting eyes police allege that he would have his co-conspirators often drop items in his residential garbage can.
Elsewhere his brother in law who is accused of selling portions of the stolen merchandise on eBay. In case that couldn’t get any worse it does. KCAL notes that his ex-wife and her current boyfriend were also both arrested for running their own versions of the operation.
All in all investigators told the outlet that they seized upwards of $3.7m in stolen merchandise and about $800k in laundered funds.
