New developments in the fight to preserve the environment inside Florida’s Everglades. According to reports, a federal judge has ruled that the controversial detention facility be closed for a host of reasons within 60 days.

The Lowdown

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams issued a ruling that the state of Florida must dismantle its Alcatraz style detention facility within 60 days. In her ruling, she also noted the severe environmental impact and continued risks of the facility in the Everglades as reason enough for ordering it closed. The move is expected to be temporary as witnesses continue to testify in the case.

She also ruled that the state cannot bring any new detainees into the facility.
