Hackers are searching for something but it remains unclear what. According to reports, computer systems that house U.S federal court records was compromised this week by alleged Russian hackers.

The Lowdown

NYT reports that the American court systems and their respective computers that house federal cases has been hacked. The system according to the report is long understood to have had severe vulnerabilities. It is not entirely clear exactly when the hack occurred though it was revealed this week by investigators. It is the latest action by Russia seen by most people as aggression.

The Times also found that the leak if it were to fully go public likely could compromise many including those charged with national security crimes — and the sources who helped put them away.

Searches for cases in the system reportedly included low to mid-level crimes in the New York area and similar jurisdictions. The Times found that many of the surnames were either Russian or Eastern European in origin.
