Disastrous being that pardoning a convicted sex trafficker would set a terrifying precedent in the United States. Over the weekend, speculation continued to grow that Maxwell’s play for a pardon may be working after all.
The Lowdown
The shocking revelation that Donald Trump appears open to the idea of pardoning convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell continues to spark conversation. According to The Hill, lawmakers who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed their outrage at the idea on top of the fact that Trump has still not released the files and alleged client list associated with the disgraced pair Epstein and Maxwell. Maxwell remains behind bars serving a 20-year sentence for her stomach-churning role in Epstein’s operation.
Hill notes that some Republicans aren’t optimistic that Maxwell will tell the truth. In one instance, some even felt she may be dishonest to secure a more lenient sentence from the Trump administration.
Maxwell was due to testify before Congress on 11 August about the situation, but that has since been postponed pending the outcome of her appeal to the Supreme Court over her 2021 conviction.
