Another day another scandal for disgraced New York City Mayor Eric Adams who is facing an uphill battle to get re-elected. On Monday, separate lawsuits emerged from four different former NYPD officers who lodged complaints against Adams that he allegedly welcomed and welcomes an environment of cronyism and corruption in one of the nation’s largest police forces.
The Lowdown
Eric Adams’ re-election campaign for Mayor of New York City just hit another wrinkle. According to the AP, Adams has been sued by four former high-ranking NYPD officials who claim that Adams allowed a culture of corruption and cronyism inside the massive police department. In one part of the suit, James Essig (former chief of detectives and 40-year police vet) claimed that the former commissioner of the NYPD sold promotions to the whopping tune of $15,000 a piece.
“They used the Police Department as their little playground,” Essig told the New York Times. The shocking claims only get worse. In the same complaint, it is alleged that Essig was fired after refusing to take part in such a scheme in the first place.
In each of the complaints, a similarity has emerged, being that it is alleged that Adams would demote or force into retirement officers who raised concerns about their practices.
Also in the suit, they claim the practice began in 2023 at the behest of former police chief and Adams ally Jeff Maddrey. The allegations claim that Maddrey would bring unqualified friends into the fold bypassing ordinary protocol to actually people.
The suits come amid numerous shocking (that later turned out to be true) claims against Adams as he mounts his re-election campaign. According to the latest related polls, Adams’ chances of being re-elected Mayor are deep underwater.
