Famed belly dancer abruptly arrested in Egypt amid government ‘s crackdown on freedom of expression

The totalitarian government of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is leading a  new crackdown on belly dancers in the country.  Crackdown efforts are centred on whether or not the art of belly dancing infringes on the country’s strict morality laws.

The Lowdown

A famed Egyptian belly dancer with scores of online fans is making headlines. According to The Telegraph, Sohila Tarek Hassan Haggag who performs under the name Linda Martino is facing a  year of hard labour if convicted of the crime of violating Egypt ‘s morality laws.   Prosecutors claim that Martino goes against the mentioned morality laws by her ‘intentionally seductive’ and ‘erotic’ techniques.  On her part she denies violating the stated morality laws citing that belly dancing is a form of art.
