The 1937 disappearance of legendary aviatrix Amelia Earhart is once again back in the headlines. Earhart at the time was attempting a round-the-world flight using a Lockheed Electra 10E. Shortly into their journey at the time, both vanished and were never seen or heard from again leading to both being declared dead in the United States two years after they disappeared.
The Lowdown
History nerds are bound to like this one. According to reports, researchers from Purdue University (where Earhart was once among faculty herself) will head to the Pacific Island of Nikumaroro in search of what appears (based on a 2015 satellite image) to have been parts of a destroyed plane. Purdue famously helped Earhart fund her doomed 1937 flight with navigator Fred Noonan.
The disappearance of Amelia Earhart is perhaps one of the most fascinating mysteries in history and it has never formally been solved.
What happened?
According to the Archeological Legacy Institute, a 2015 satellite image is what has sparked plans for the renewed search for any indication that Earhart was on the island when she died. The image in question allegedly featured an object that per a press release matched Earthart’s aircraft in size and shape.
Researchers from both Purdue and the Institute are expected to have about 5 days on the storied island to see if anything turns up. Purdue on their part has promised up to $500,000 towards the first stage of the major search. It is the latest search for any sign of Earhart’s iconic plane or signs that she ventured off into the island and later died.
