The Lowdown

Big news in New York City tonight following the return of Mahmoud Khalil from immigration detention. According to reports, Khail was freed from detention over the weekend arriving back at Newark’s airport. The Palestinian-American activist had been detained since March on trumped up charges over his support for Gaza during the ongoing war in Gaza at the hands of Israel.

“If they threaten me with detention, even if they would kill me, I would still speak up for Palestine,” he said in comments to the press following his arrival home.  “I just want to go back and continue the work I was already doing, advocating for Palestinian rights, a speech that should actually be celebrated rather than punished.”

On Friday, Khail was released from a Louisiana immigration detention centre after a federal judge ruled that he be released on bail. His release came after a judge found punishing someone for a civil immigration matter was unconstitutional and therefore ordered his release.
