American retailer Amazon is once again back in the news and not for good reason. According to the Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA) reasonable grounds have been found against claims that suppliers are facing payment issues.
The Lowdown
Amazon is back in the news this week amid claims that it is not paying its suppliers here in the UK on time. According to grocery regulators, which the adjudicator has its own rules, grocers must abide by several rules but one in particular: there shan’t be any delays in payments to said suppliers.
Amazon is just the latest retailer to face inquiries into its practices with Tesco and the Co-op having been targeted in the past. According to the agency’s website it has the power to fine a company up to 1% of its turnover if a company is found to have breached the strict grocers code.
In a shock survey in 2024, the GCA found that suppliers (the same survey also triggered the first GCA complaint to Amazon last year) had more issues with Amazon as a whole than nearly every other grocer there is in the UK of which there are 14 mega grocers.
