Shocking news in Minnesota tonight. According to reports, law enforcement say that the shooter dressed as law enforcement in order to take out Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. Officials have deemed the killing a premeditated assassination. At least one other political couple were also injured in the attack.
The Lowdown
According to Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz, the state is reeling tonight following the shocking murder of State Rep Melissa Hortman. During a press conference, Walz noted that the case appeared to be ‘politically motivated’ in nature.
The protests in reference are the ‘No Kings’ protests planned across the United States. Many protests planned across MN were cancelled in response to the incident unfolding with the shooter still at large. Officials are asking people in the area to be on high alert given the suspect remains at large.
During the same press conference, police confirmed chilling details about the shooter. Police say that the man dressed in a realistic cop uniform is believed to have been the shooter that opened fire. Police also noted how realistic his appearance would be to others including the fact that they drove a vehicle that looked identical to ordinary police SUV squad cars.
What happened?
Around 2am Saturday morning, police received a call in Champlin, which is outside of Minneapolis, tha state rep John Hoffman and his wife had been shot. Because of the shooting involving Hoffman, police visited the home of Hortman shortly after 3:30am nearby. When they arrived on scene, they discovered the alleged gunman along with his eerily identical looking squad car parked in the front of the residence before officers were fired on and the man escaped through the backyard. The city of nearby Brooklyn Park remains under a shelter-in-place order.
An investigation remains ongoing. One other couple Democratic state rep John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were both critically injured but have since emerged from surgery.
The gunman according to what we’ve learned has been identified as Vance Boelter, 57, a former workforce board employee appointed to that role by two different Governors of the state.
