Culture wars over reproductive healthcare in the United States are continuing this week. According to reports, House Republicans have introduced legislation that would undo a three decade old law that was first meant to protect abortion clinics and those in which seek their services.

The Lowdown

Known as the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act the law was first signed into law in 1994 by then U.S President Bill Clinton. It was initially enacted to help protect abortion clinniin the face of rising violence and misinformation. In essence, the law made it a federal crime to use force or threaten clinics or those attending for services.

But the law didn’t just serve abortion clinics.   It also served fertility clinics, anti-abortion pregnancy centres, churches,  and other related places from similar violence.

Anti-abortion violence picked up quickly following the previous reversal of Roe v Wade in the United States.  The bill to attempt to reverse the law comes from Republicans on the Judiciary Committee. The bill will now move onto the full House for consideration.
