Certainly good news for New Yorkers hoping to be able to afford their apartments going forward. According to a ruling, a federal judge has   declined to stop the broker fee ban from going into effect. It was first passed last year with a veto-proof majority by the City Council.
The Lowdown
The end of apartment broker fees are finally here in New York City. According to a federal judge’s ruling, Judge Ronnie Abrams declined to stop the enactment of the Fairness in Apartment Rental Expenses Act citing that many of the concerns were policy disagreements and not actual constitutional questions.
Her ruling tossed all but a single claim from the suit and overall declined to pause the law as the case plays out. Broker fees in New York City are often very high and cumbersome thereby having further added to the city’s already sky-high rents for people seeking rental apartments.Â
The FARE Act as mentioned was first passed last year by NYC’s powerful City Council who has sought in recent years to reign in out of control landlords and living costs across the boroughs.
