According to local media reports, police have managed to uncover new information in the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki in the Dominican Republic. Earlier this month, the U.S. student vanished while on Spring Break and has not been seen or heard from since.
The Lowdown
Local Dominican news outlet Noticias Sin reports that prosecutors interviewed the man last known to have seen Konanki alive and found out new information in the process. The outlet notes that the man Joshua Steven Riibe who is not considered a suspect also told prosecutors that the duo who had gone out to water — was swept out to sea by a powerful wave before they attempted to make it back to shore. Riibe made it to shore she did not.
The same outlet reports that Riibe told prosecutors that he is trained as a lifeguard but for pools not the beach. Therefore his efforts to save Konanki were more difficult than he was prepared for.
Prosecutors interviewed Riibe on Wednesday afternoon who also revealed that after they came to following the heavy wave, Konanki quickly grew tired of trying to swim back to shore. The investigation into Konanki ‘s disappearance remains ongoing involving authorities from the Dominican Republic, the U.S, and India (where she was born.)
In other news regarding the case, NBC reports that police in the area have confiscated Riibe ‘s passport in connection to the case. The outlet also notes that Riibe is under ‘confined’ to his hotel while the investigation reportedly plays out.
