The SAVE ACT is the latest Republican effort to tackle the so-called issue of ‘voter fraud’ in the United States by Republican lawmakers. The problem with their latest quest is that there are so few cases of voter fraud or illegal voting the SAVE ACT makes little sense as a result.

The Lowdown

But what it does do is disenfranchise millions of women voters for carrying what would amount to their husband’s last name. According to the act, people (in this case women) whose last name doesn’t match up with individual documents would be barred from voting in federal elections.

The SAVE Act requires documentation, such as a legal passport or certified birth certificate matching your current legal name to allow a person to register to vote. It doesn’t explicitly target women, though, women would be hit especially hard considering they often take their husband’s last name in marriage for example.

According to the same report some 69m American women could be affected by this change.
