The Lowdown
Mangione who infamously gunned down UnitedHealthcare CEO on 4 December in a literal brazen assassination in the middle of Manhattan is having his day in court. Mangione who has maintained his innocence is facing a state case that may see him jailed for life without parole while the federal case may see him die for his crimes.
What happened?
On 4 December during a healthcare conference last year, Brian Thompson the then-CEO of UnitedHealthcare was gunned down outside of the host hotel in Manhattan in a literal assassination that played out like a movie plot. At the time, Mangione managed to flee Manhattan by bus evading authorities for several days. In the days that it took law enforcement to find Mangione, he left behind a trove of evidence in his path that included a water bottle and cereal bar near the murder scene that had his DNA on it.
Officials allege that Mangione was motivated to murder Thompson over allegations against UnitedHealthcare as a company that it was putting profits over patients. His alleged plan and plot to murder Thompson was in itself allegedly detailed and intricate and included troves of evidence tying him to the crime along the way. Perhaps the most telling piece of evidence in the case against Mangione is the alleged bullets recovered. Some of them reportedly contained the words ‘DENY’ ‘DEPOSE’ and ‘DELAY’ words that appear to have been a reference to a book called Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It
