A new rule proposed and passed by the Board of Education would require the parents of local students to produce proof of U.S. citizenship or status to enroll in school. The rule has sparked panic and concern among immigrant communities in the area.

The Lowdown

According to reports, Oklahoma has moved one step closer to requiring students in the state to furnish proof of U.S. citizenship to attend school. The rule is blatantly aimed at Donald Trump’s immigration policies which are further aimed at deporting those without citizenship or status in the United States.

The proposal would not in fact bar students from actually going to school but would keep them listed as ‘tallies’ in a database per existing policy according to the School Board. Despite such parents are rightfully concerned that they could be targeted by ICE raids.

Legislators in the state still have to approve the proposal followed by the Governor.
