This effectively marks the end of TikTok in the United States until it sells itself from its parent company. But the company has made it clear it does not intend to sell itself. The ban is expected to go into effect on Sunday.
The Lowdown
According to the Supreme Court, Sunday’s ban on TikTok can in fact proceed. On Friday, the court handed down an unsigned opinion with no noted dissents on the matter. While the app will be banned (until it sells itself) it is unclear how exactly such a ban will be enforced.
Reminder: TikTok has a TikTok (and other social media) style alternative platform called Lemon8. At this time it is not expected to be banned with TikTok.
Here’s what to know
On Sunday, the ban is expected to come into play. This means that in the United States cellphone ‘app stores’ will no longer be allowed to offer TikTok for download. For those that already have the app prior to the ban, eventually because TikTok is barred from updating the app in the U.S., the app will be rendered useless as new phone software updates roll out.
It isn’t clear how the ban will be enforced because there isn’t a previous precedent of the government having previously wagered war on a social media site.
