The Lowdown

Departing U.S President Joe Biden is using his last days in office to commute the sentences of more non-violent offenders. According to an announcement from the WH, Biden will commute the sentences of some 2.5k non-violent offenders bringing his total commutations to more than any other President ever.

This particular round of commutations will affect those who were originally sentenced based on discredited distinctions between crack and powder cocaine per the same announcement.

Non-violent drug offenders in America are often serving wildly disproportionate prison sentences compared to what they would’ve received today (for example, marijuana possession and related.)
