According to Al Jazeera, the unity declaration came after three days of intensive meetings in Beijing with Chinese officials. China ‘s place in the discussions come as the country seeks to have a larger footing in the Middle East though it is unclear to what extent is being sought by the Chinese.

Hamas and Fatah have been at odds for many years most notoriously following two thousand and six. At the time, Hamas seized power over Gaza igniting the internal turmoil within the Palestinian region that would hamper attempts at bringing democracy into the territory.
