Washington is abuzz with reports that the far-right and their allies have their next target: The Cornstock Act of 1873.

The Lowdown

In 1873, Congress enacted the act in a bid to stop obscene materials from being mailed and to stop any materials that could prevent conception or cause an abortion.

In the far-right’s war on women enforcing this act would likely mean that abortion medication would be prohibited from being shipped. In modern day, the act is not presently enforced at this time.

Far-right members and their allies are targeting the act after a series of setbacks in their effort to rollback generations of women’s healthcare advancements in the U.S.

As a result of these efforts, a new piece of legislation has been introduced to repeal the act all together.
