Israel is forging ahead with a series of judicial changes in the country that are poised to help Netanyahu all but evade criminal consequences in his corruption trial.
Despite widespread pushback from all corners of Israel including in government; the Supreme Court, legal officials and scholars, and everyone in between Israel is moving forward. The new government formed by right-wing dictator Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that judicial changes initially announced as part of his re-election campaign are to take place despite how unpopular they’ve become among society at large.
Of course then there’s what the overhaul actually accomplishes which has been derided by almost everyone including the international community. It would weaken the power of the Supreme Court thereby granting legislators the ability to pass laws that the court has previously struck down. It would also give the government greater power over appointing judges and limit the independence of government advisers.
According to local reports, a Sunday cabinet meeting between party officials confirmed the moves. “We will complete legislating the reforms in a way that will correct what needs correcting, will totally protect individual rights and will restore the public’s faith in the justice system that so much requires this reform,” Netanyahu said.
